(pronounced ‘wah-kah-tie’) or how we like to call it “A piece of our little Peru”. On December 1, 2016, we proudly opened our doors to the public in our friendly and welcoming Edgewood neighborhood located in Northeast DC.
The idea and inception of Huacatay began almost two years from day of its grand opening. Edgar Diaz and Byron Maldonado are the proud co-owners and partners of this burgeoning restaurant enterprise. They are admittedly -- a couple of Peruvian food fanatics who wanted to make sure that the food as well as the restaurant’s name was authentic as could be. To achieve this, they turned to Katherine Maldonado (wife of the co-owner) who combined her grandmother’s Peruvian traditional recipes and added a taste of ‘secret’ and modern culinary flavors. Hence, the name “Huacatay” was chosen as it is a native Peruvian herb known and famous for its savory and earthy pungent aroma.
And, so the story begins. Huacatay specializes in Peruvian cuisine, which includes delicious charbroiled chicken as well as other Peruvian traditional specialty dishes, side dishes, salads, sandwiches and desserts.
Aiming to please and to be of service 7 days a week; they offer up daily – a great atmosphere dine-in restaurant, take-out or curbside pick-up options, and catering services.
